#6 Korean Soap Operas

My Sassy Girl“My Sassy Girl”
“2 Ton Beauty”
“Kick the Moon”
“My Wife is a Gangster”

If you ask any asian person, they will tell you that they have either seen or heard of at least one of these movies. With over 10,852,845 views in the world, My Sassy Girl is arguably the most popular Korean film worldwide. Why is this? How does a Korean film make its way across the Atlantic Ocean and into homes around the world? The same way that globalization has made Harry Potter Series the third most popular movie series in Korea.

PhoneAsians like other asians. They will never tell it to you though. They don’t care who made it or what race they are. All they care about is the fact that it is in fact an Asian product. Michelle Kwan, an American born figure skater. However, she is loved by millions of Asians around the world because she is in fact an Asian product. Asians have created a special system of work allocation. The Chinese are responsible for crappy products and martial arts action films. Koreans have cornered the market on cell phones, televisions, and heart-warming dramas. The Japanese pretty much own the world of tomorrow with their fuel-efficient cars and tiny gizmos. The others (Vietnamese) are responsible for manufacturing clothes and shoes.

Knowing this, the next time you need a good or product, ask your racially enabled friends. They are naturally experts, and are able to tell you about their country’s product(s). Need a phone? Need clothes or shoes? Ask about any asian. However, if you need a 3 hour long “heart-throbbingly” good movie to get your mind off of your problems, simply say, “My Sassy Girl” in a crowd of Asians, and a they will all offer you their copy.

I’m Pinoy and Asian. I love Korean dramas but I know that Pinoys prefer American goods rather than Chinese-made products (if they could afford them).

My friend who is taiwanese says:

10:50:29 PM Jason: no mention about [term for Japanese people]
10:50:33 PM Jason: prolly written by a [racial slur which normally applies to any kind of asian but when my friend uses it he always means Koreans]

So give Japan some love please.

The post about Korean comedies was good but the one about the bowl haircuts was pedantic and thoughtless. As we AZNs are wont to say, study and try harder!

  • 6 themachine // Feb 19, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Please excuse my thoughtlessness and pedantic writing. I will write less sarcastic and more politically correct posts to appease you. Thanks for reading.

If you love My Sassy Girl, then you’ll love Windstruck (same female actor and director!).

Some people believe that this is the prequel to My Sassy Girl ;-)

    Also:
    My Girl and I
    My Scary Girl
    Lover’s Concierto
    My Little Bride
    Sweet 18

o…m…g every female relative of mine is OBSESSED. mention “stairway to heaven” and they will waste every single tissue box in the house recounting the events of that series… it’s insane and as much as i make fun of them… i love it too.

  • 14 Tina // Mar 29, 2009 at 8:59 pm

I NEVER watch Korean soap operas. But I’m Vietnamese and my parents taught me to hate Koreans.

  • 15 Wanda // Apr 22, 2009 at 10:09 am

I absolutely LOVE Korean dramas. If Song Seung-heon or Hyun Bin or Jo In-Seong or So Ji-sub is in it, then I probably own it and have watched it more than twice. My favorite is definitely Snow Queen but I also love all the comedic ones too. Everything I’ve learned about Korean culture and language I’ve learned from watching Korean dramas. In fact, those dramas were what made me want to visit Seoul so badly and once there I fell in love with it. Now I want to go to Seoul to teach English just so I can be closer to all my favorite Korean actors.

Well, I’m Indonesian and had never fancied this K-Drama before, until one of my friend downloaded the original soundtracks of “My Sassy Girl Choon Hyang” in my room, and left all of those songs in my computer. I stumbled upon it, and… couldn’t refrain myself from continue watching! Later, i even downloaded the whole series of the drama from youtube. And it was great enjoying the drama. LOL.

I was born in S. Korea, but I don’t find their drama entertaining because it propagates sexist ideas, meek women, and arrogant men.

  • 18 unisex // Sep 11, 2009 at 2:13 pm

FULL HOUSE and All-IN are the best

I’m Asian, I don’t even watch Korean drama.

“Asians like other Asians. They will never tell it to you though. They don’t care who made it or what race they are.”

    Stereotypical much?

  • 23 Danster // Feb 12, 2010 at 1:29 pm

I’ve noticed this site is filled with tons of Asian stereotypes. A large part of what is written isn’t even true. Most Asians have NOT even seen or heard of Korean dramas.

  • 24 Brendel // Jun 17, 2010 at 9:58 am

    @Danster,

I disagree. Asia’s been hit by hallyu.

  • 25 Unknown // Jul 11, 2010 at 8:09 pm

    @Tina,
go suck my nonexistent dick; you are racist, and your parents are thoughtless.
