Despite their parents’ constant nagging to stop wasting time, video games are popular among Asian Youths. Take one quick look at a typical Asian’s game collection, and you are likely to see at least one version of Final Fantasy, Super Mario, and probably many more similar style RPGs (role playing games).
Just like with every other form of pop entertainment that Asians enjoy, they will completely and utterly obsess over it. Although Final Fantasy is generally popular in “nerd culture,” Asians find ways to take it to another level. They will load their iPods with in-game music and learn how to play it on the piano, or post drawings of game characters (all done in the anime style with correct anatomical measurements of course). However, the most devoted fans will dress up in costumes of their favorite characters, complete with weapons and accessories: a phenomenon known as cosplay. For some reason, cosplay is wildly popular in Japan, although it is hardly limited to that country.
Previously mentioned in post #7, Anime, “There is a wonderful anime fanbase and following” who will dress up and go to Anime Expos with their friends. One of our members mentions being pinched and prodded all day long by girls dressed in japanese school attire. Asians will go to great lengths to achieve these transformations in order to look like their favorite game characters. Where else do you think they get the spiky hair idea from?
So why is Final Fantasy so popular among Asians? The repetitive nature of the combat and character advancement plays well to the Asian tendency toward OCD (Post #28). Likewise, the numeric and predictable methods for ‘leveling up” characters satisfies the Asian need for a sense of accomplishment. Just like grades or paychecks, RPGs offer a set of numeric based awards that are given almost entirely as a function of time invested and hard work. Asians crave these rewards the same way alcoholics crave their liquor. This combination of game elements means that Final Fantasy is a game made by Asians, for Asians; a veritable window into the Asian soul.

I don’t think it’s just Final Fantasy by itself. It’s more of the RPG type of game. For example if you play Final Fantasy and enjoy it a decent amount, then one would have to know Star Ocean, Chrono Cross etc. I do agree on the cosplay situation for Final Fantasy, just because there are so many characters and it’s a never ending game. Someone should make something about video games in general espcailly something alone the lines of Star Craft, FPS games such as Counter-Strike etc.

um, not just asians dress and be a final-fantasy freak..the only reason that it is mostly loved by asians is because anime came from asain people(japanese) so it’s like a god to them…um…

On the bit about Asians downloading the music from Final Fantasy games, well you do realize that some of those are brilliant compositions or songs, don’t you? “One Winged Angel” is the one that comes to mind as well as “Simple Clean” and “Sanctuary.”

Yo: “Simple and Clean” and “Sanctuary” are from Kingdom Hearts…

I agree with your posts. I am asian. I used to spend all my free time playing Final Fantasy 8, Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario, and Metal Gear Solid.
I also like Gran Turismo. It was the first racing game that I played that had a good selection of Asian cars.

Chanel Purses that dot the collection, they’re very taste-specific, but I could see some of the more subdued version working quite well with summery white linen or various bright colors for contrast. From Chanel Outlet

I’m a white girl that likes Final Fantasy. I don’t obsess over it, like cosplay or buy Final Fantasy products, but they’re a fun way to waste time.
One thing that always confused me is that many of the characters looks white and they’re supposed to look Japanese. I honestly don’t care what ethnicity the character is, but it’s confusing. I read the earlier post on how Asian people see Asians and whatever and white people see white people and whatever, and I guess that’s true, but come on. Lightning looks like a white girl and Cloud, Tidus, and Squall all look like white boys. And mostly because of their eye color and hair color than anything. But, whatever. I don’t care. But it’s funny b/c I got into an arguement with one of my friends the other day about how anime characters look white. We were talking about Sailor Moon and I mentioned how she was Japanese and he was like “she’s white” and all the kids in class agreed with him no matter how much I tried to explain that although Sailor Moon looks white she’s native Japanese.
