Many people like to stand out in a crowd. Although the typical Asian is usually a shy, inhibitive individual; there are exceptions. The bleaching of an Asian’s hair is a popular way of being a said “exception.” However, the terms “Asian” and “black hair” are usually joined at the hip. Asians are self-loathing regarding this fact, and often wish they were two mutually exclusive factors. Alas, it was not to be. That doesn’t stop Asians from trying to alter the color of their locks, often ending with awful consequences. Here’s a breakdown of the possibilities:
Brunette: This is acceptable. Most Asians naturally have black hair, so making the transition to brown hair isn’t too much of a stretch. It looks relatively natural and meshes well with an Asian’s complexion. Due to the relative paleness of Asian skin tones, becoming a brunette can be advantageous, as it effectively takes the focus away from the “yellowness” and allows their natural features to shine more prominently.
Red: Let it be noted that this category also includes red’s more exuberant cousin “pink”. Suffice to say, red/pink colored hair is for the Asian wanting to express themselves through some ridiculously alternative fashion trend. (such as goth, emo or lolita when jet black just isn’t hardcore enough.) As a hair color, red is an extravagantly unnatural choice for Asians.
Yet, it exudes that “Hey, look at me!” attitude, which may suit those wannabe extroverts wishing to make fools of themselves in public. Simply put, if an Asian wants to avoid being ridiculed in a large group of people, they shouldn’t dye their hair an extravagantly outrageous shade of this color! However, if done sparsely with a brunette twinge, it can be made acceptable. Basically with red, the more natural-looking, the better. (see above)
Blonde: This is a tough one because Western values dictate a belief that blondes are generally attractive and that blonde hair is very desirable. After all, don’t blondes have more fun? Asians like fun, right? Right…? The problem here is that the majority of blondes today aren’t even naturally blonde, emphasizing the desirability of such a trait. However, 99% of the time, “blonde hair” and “Asian” shouldn’t even be put in the same sentence together. Obviously, there are occasions where blonde Asians can come off as absolute knockouts, but a blonde Asian gives off a trashy look, as the blonde hair contrasts so sharply with the general Asian skin color. The first thing to come to mind here can end up being: *cough*hooker*cough*. Well, depending on who you ask, that might not necessarily be a bad thing…

Multicolored: Okay, if you’re a clown or a clown-in-training then we’ll cut you some slack. For anyone else, if you wish to don a multicolored rainbow on your head, put simply, you should be stoned immediately! Come on guys, Asians are supposedly renowned for their “intelligence”, so for the sake of all of us, just don’t do it, okay?
Anything else: Umm, are you stupid? See multicolored.
There are certain exceptions. Asians who reside in areas where ridiculous hair style trends are seen as somewhat of a norm, often can conform by sporting a ridiculous hair style of their own, often with an outrageous color that should never be seen on an Asian’s head (or many other people’s heads for that matter). Yes, this is referring specifically to people in some parts of Japan, Korea, and HK, who think they’re “oh so funky” what with their red, green & purple hair colors. Remember kids, if you’re making such an effort to be non-conformist, you’re in fact conforming, and around in a circle we go…
White people can often manage to pull off bleached hair with aplomb; unfortunately this is not a good idea for many Asians, unless that unnatural look is what they’re going for deliberately. So fellow Asians, even though you may be extremely tempted, the general consensus is that you shouldn’t dye your hair any color other than brown (or perhaps dark red). Anything else just doesn’t work! Here’s some food for thought: as much as many straight men want to try on women’s underwear, we know we just mustn’t do so. The same principle is applicable here…
P.S. This is piece not intended to insult anyone, be it Asians who bleach their hair or men who don women’s underwear… oh and just for the record, this author has NOTHING against people (especially women) with bleached hair, even though an impression to the contrary may have been given. As mentioned earlier, if done right, Asians with bleached hair, or with subtle highlights can come off as quite gorgeous. Those people know who they are… =)

Back in the ’80s I wanted to do my hair white. My hairdresser flat-out refused b/c he couldn’t guarantee my hair wouldn’t all fall out in the process. Now that I’m starting to go grey, I don’t even want to start THAT whole cycle of dying my hair for the rest of my life!

I had my pictures professionally taken recently, all done with natural light. My natural highlights are a medium brown, so the pictures look like I’ve had my hair highlighted!

I actually like to dye my hair a deep brown. I always loved that color of hair, so it’s more of a fetish for me than anything else. Although my barber likes to dye his red with white tips and insisted on me getting a reddish brown every time I go there, so I have given up dyeing my hair.
I usually don’t like it when people dye their hair too light, but every other Asian seems to be doing those highlights, but my Buddhist philosophy is to live and let live, so if people feel that they should dye their hair in 5 different colors, they should feel free to do so. And I have to say Tila Tequila looks pretty cute in that blonde.

haha this is exactly what I think. Can’t see the appeal in it. And these girls would be constantly pushing the top bit of their hair upward so it’ll get even more puffy.

Yea its the cut, you know some people can pull off crazy colored hair, with a cute cut, but an ugly ass cut plus ugly ass color is just bad bad bad….O DO A BLOG ON THE ASIAN BOWL CUT! i cant believe it hasnt been dont yet. With the straight bangs…do the history of it, I would love to know when that whole thing started, and thats probably why so many asians now have ugly ass “unique” hair cuts. Asian hair is beautiful, usually thick, and perfectly straight, so I can see how their might be problems with it when wanting to do cute hair styles, because it doesnt have much curl to it for it to be easily styled, thats why im guessing the straight ugly punk thick on top thin on bottom thing started. o well, i hope to see a blog on asian hair styles, and i would love a history lesson on top of it…

The girl with the multi-colored hair is Amy Doan (Shrinkle), if I’m not mistaken, and she rocks something serious. She’s a fashion designer and artist, and I’ve had a major girl crush on her for ages.
I actually think Asian gals get away with crazy hair color more so than anyone else because of a generally non-freckled, more uniform complexion.

your possibly right annie about asian girls maybe being able to pull it off. I think we see them on tv and in movies, its easier for us to think that they can pull it off. Although in person, if you were to encounter one at school, or work, (a job that doesnt involve peircings, or tattoos, or Hottopic) you would think they were out of place, because asian girls are supposed to be two things, one is kinda dowdy, but really smart, and you know she got accepted to harvard, but shes going to brown because she wants to be free from the norm, and two, the hot asian girl who dresses in hollister and abercrombie and fitch, she is semi smart, and would most likely get accepted to a state school. When i think of an asian girl, crazy dyed punk hair doesnt first come to mind, which is probably why they do it, because they want to be different, and since they can pull it off without looking hard and whorey, but usually cute, and innocent, it gives it that seal of O.K by the public. One of my best friends in highschool was an asian girl, and she had a rather large beehive, with a large black bow on the back, and under her black hair was bright pink. But even still I dont consider her a typical asian girl, but she probably is in japan, or more urban areas in the US.

I have these annoying red strands in my hair when I stay out in the sun too long. It’s okay when you lift it up and you can actually see the red glinting against the black, but when you lok at the whole thing, the red blends with the black to make my hair look brown. Ugh.

YES I DID! she got into an ivy league, ofcourse, she was tiny just ity bity! she loved hello kitty, and that whole “im defying my parents, but i still want to be a brain surgeon, and then work for doctors without borders” deal. Ok she went to brown, I had a bit of a falling out with her in our senior year, but i still love her. I got a 98 on a test once, and she got a 95, and well that was the beginning of the end….lmao I cheated a bit ofcourse, I mean, hello, there is a difference between AP students and regular students, AP students know how to cheat well. She got into every ivy league I believe, except harvard. She didnt want to go to Princeton, because she said it was in New Jersey. She was very anti punk, but still wore the style, she dyed her hair pink for the class picture, then dyed it back to black so her parents wouldnt find out. Im guessing she was 4 feet 10 inches, but with her hive, she was probably like 5,4. she did have a nose peircing tho, but i dont remember her wearing it much. She didnt do drugs though, which at my school were plentiful. I didnt either, but all my other friends did, I did have to tell them that I developed a bit of a coke habit in my junior year, but I was off the stuff because I was going vegan, total bullshit lie. She was totally into the skinny jeans, and noam chomsky pins. And she was the best best best person at giving the silent treatment, i do know that, I dont think anyone could beat her in an ignoring contest. very asian, so very asian, she was vietnamese…nuff said

Ok you last couple posters dont seem to understand this blog. Its not that we care, its the fact that alot of asians do color their hair to stand out, but infact they are just following a fad, if you want o stand out shave your head, otherwise dont pull that “you norms think we are too unique and different”, no we dont. We “norms” dont need to have to go to extreme lengths to stand out, because we have personality and dont need alot of crap that alot of people do with terrible self esteem need, like crazy hair colors, etc. The people who do that want to be noticed, that fine, but be completely unique, coloring your hair just puts you in a certain group with people who dress and look just like you. Your not different if half the high school dresses and looks like you, sorry. You would stand out more if you were vocal and not with some little scene kid wannabe emo group, if your going to dress like them, then act like them, otherwise your a poser, and posers are sheep. color your hair all you want, thats fine, your young, most it only distracts from your face and personality, unless thats what you want. First off, this is said in a calm tone, not yelling or angry or anything, just presenting another point of view
Over and over again you keep saying that anyone who dyes their hair a color like pink etc. is doing it just to stand out, WRONG, have you ever thought about the fact that they might just like the colors?
I plan on getting pink highlights because I like colors… that’s it, I don’t give a crap about “standing out” or being different, I would actually prefer otherwise, I’m kind of shy. But even so I PERSONALLY like the colors, I would still dye my hair even if I never went outside again

I understand this whole thing is satire, but I can’t help but still be offended…this seems to have hit the place where satire stops being funny and just prejudiced. And I’m not even asian. I’m white with dark dark brown hair, I’d be a stereotypical hispanic if it weren’t for my pale skin (I do actually have an asian-esque pale skin with vibrant yellow undertone). And I dye my hair several shades lighter copper because I think it looks nice and because I like red hair and think it’s sexy.
Someday I would like to dye my hair copper with bright orange highlights, or maybe let it grow out naturally to my coffee brown color and get blue and pink chunks dyed in. Just cause I think it looks neat, and I am an artist and like my inner creativity show on the outside too.

So, I just read through everyone’s responses and I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no need for all this arguing. I agree that sy88′s post was a little stereotypical, but it’s just an opinion. He/She’s not COMMANDING you to listen/agree to it. Even some of the Asians who find this offending can agree that SOME people just CAN’T pull it off and it looks awful. Also some people who can’t stand the colored/bleached hair can agree that there are some people that CAN pull it off. It’s just a matter of opinion and point of view. Is there really a reason to debate? People can do what they want to do. People can think what they want to think. This post was just an opinion of one person.

Everyone one of you who say that Asian girls are supposed to represent intelligence and all that bs are narrow and close-minded traditionalists. We live in America and we all have the freedom to express ourselves in whatever manner we choose. I am personally offended that you would use my best friend (Amy Doan of Shrinkle) to make an example of how Asian girls should not look like clowns. Sorry assholes, but we don’t represent ASIA. We portray our self-identities in this salad bowl of American culture as confident, creative and artistic American girls. Further, my hair is multi-colored (pink and violet) and I could care less what all any of you traditionalist perceive me as. I went to UC Berkeley, enrolled as a freshman and completed a double major BA in three years. I live in the Silicon Valley and am now climbing my way up the corporate ladder with piercings, tattoos and unconventional hair color. Amy also has a college degree and has her own successful clothing company. So all you guys who want to call us clowns can go right ahead. Most asian people dont like bleached hair! pls take it off! our skin colour is brown, brown hair with brown skin look anything but pretty, you really need make up with whiter skin tone to match those brown hair. Because dying your hair doesn’t affect anyone. Getting up on a podium expressing viewpoints;the whole point of that is to spread an ideal. He represents a rather disgusting side of life anyone “intelligent” should oppose(seriously, WTF at that comment).
There are such things as viewpoints that are taken offensively, and viewpoints thta are inherently offensive since they make a move against the personal rights of others(Where those rights in turn have little effect on others.
And I don’t understand people who say they’re all “Following a fad”. EVERYONE follows some fad or another, and a fad that’s slightly less mainstream is,probabilisticaly, more likely to be something that fits you(Think of it being like more sizes that fit people outside of the mainstrea rather than a poor attempt at “one size fit all”).

This viewpoint sounds like it belongs to the banana republic conservative Asian. Which may be a good or bad thing depending on who’s doing the judging.
As for me, the only hair colors I like are red, blue, and of course black.
And I like seeing people looking different from the average person, whether it’s with hair color or clothes, even if it’s been done before. It’s refreshing and if the person looks ridiculous, I love it even more. Seriously, who cares if it was/is a fad. Most ppl might do it to fit in or whatever, but some actually do it because they truly like it.
Besides, although normal is safe and there’s a smaller chance of you being laughed at..it’s boring. Yet, too much craziness is tiring and probably more maintenance. Whatever.
Even though it’s just hair color, it’s the little things that count. Variety once in a while is a good thing.

I think Tila Tiquila is gorgeous and people should stop slating her because it’s who she wants to be and she didn’t even ask for any of your opinions in the first place. At least she can carry it off. At the moment, I have dyed brown hair, and I would like to dye it just a tiny bit lighter but I wouldn’t go as far as blond, because I just know i couldn’t be able to pull it off! Wow I haven’t been on this page for ages… it’s kinda weird how my humble ‘bleached hair’ post has turned into an all-out witch hunt! Should I be scared for my safety now?
People are taking it very personally IMO, and insults are being hurled left, right and centre… not ideal, I would say. Again, let me emphasize, it’s all light-hearted, people! If you don’t like the piece then please feel free to say so, but the personal attacks on one’s character are very hurtful sometimes. Even those few who support my POV seem to be getting stick.
Seems like there’s an invisible line we’re not supposed to cross or something. We’re allowed to criticize the tendency for Asian girls to go for white guys, we’re allowed to take shots at our weird tendency to use excessive peace signs, and be obsessed with the small shape of our eyes… but oh no, when one points out something that hits a small minority to close to home… we’ve gone too far, have we?
Just one last thing I wanted to discuss, and it’s from the post directly above mine (sorry, I really couldn’t be bothered going through each and every post)…

asians who dye their hair any shade of brown tend to give off the impression that they’re desperate to be white. in my mind, it is no better than blonde, except that it generally tends to be more flattering than blonde.
with more vibrant shades of red and all those colors that don’t naturally sprout from the human scalp, they manage to TRANSCEND race as those colors belong to NO race. writing off these possibilities is not only dismissive and narrow-minded, but AESTHETICALLY IGNORANT.
while we’re at it: there is no such thing as a distinct “asian” skin tone. asians come in many shades of dark and light, warm and cool.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. But I must say that I disagree with the author’s. I’m Asian, and my hair is naturally dark brown. It’s now jet black, bleach blonde and purple. Does this make me inferior than Asians with brown or black hair? I find it very ludicrous how some Asians seem to be so obsessed with picking on other Asians who are out of the “norm.” I have nothing against the author’s aesthetic values, but he or she should respect others’ aesthetic values as well. This is a free country and people can do whatever they want to do with their hair. Hey, it’s not your hair that they’re messing with. Get over it and mind your own business.

This article is completely prejudice against us Asians on so many different levels. To say that Asians who dye their hair are trying to fit into the Western hemisphere because they’re trying to be white? Are you serious? How can you possibly try to even justify such an ignorant remark? I dye my hair because I personally like reddish brown hair not because I’m trying to be “white”. My appearance is mine alone. To try to say that Asians who dye their hair are trying to be unique and different is ignorant as well. How about all the caucasian men and women who dye their hair blonde when they naturally have brown hair? Are they trying to be different too? Or caucasian men and women who dye their hair black? Also on another note, to say that all Asians look alike is completely racist. Racism arises when you group people of a similar ethnic background as somehow being “outsiders” to your own, and instead of seeing them as individuals, you see them all as one group of people who all look alike. This article is just offensive, you should be ashamed of yourselves. To claim to know the stuff that Asian people like, I must tell you, you really have no clue.

You’re totally mistaken. First, you must be blind not to see that yes, many Asian people DO want to adpot western beauty criteria. I am not saying they want to be white, but the lesage they send is that Western variety of hair color is better.

You think you are not trying to look like a white person, but the point is, you have adopted a beauty criteria which is in no way Asian, but definiltely from Europe. You probably never would have if everyone on Earth had black hair.
So yes, the author of this article is right: white can dye their hair, and it still looks more or less natural, whereas it doesn’t work with other peoples.
Saying that is not racism…or then God IS racist, since that’s the way He made peoples of this world. It’s up to us, people from around the world, not to make it trendy to be more Eureopean.

Most white women are brunettes and not only do they dye their hair blonde, they dye it unnatural shades of red. Then there is green and pink.
I love my natural black hair and I think it’s beautiful, but to mix it up, I might dye it dark blue, like Uchiha Mikoto dark blue. Indigo?
