#73 Bleached Hair

Many people like to stand out in a crowd. Although the typical Asian is usually a shy, inhibitive individual; there are exceptions. The bleaching of an Asian’s hair is a popular way of being a said “exception.” However, the terms “Asian” and “black hair” are usually joined at the hip. Asians are self-loathing regarding this fact, and often wish they were two mutually exclusive factors. Alas, it was not to be. That doesn’t stop Asians from trying to alter the color of their locks, often ending with awful consequences. Here’s a breakdown of the possibilities:

Brunette: This is acceptable. Most Asians naturally have black hair, so making the transition to brown hair isn’t too much of a stretch. It looks relatively natural and meshes well with an Asian’s complexion. Due to the relative paleness of Asian skin tones, becoming a brunette can be advantageous, as it effectively takes the focus away from the “yellowness” and allows their natural features to shine more prominently.

Red: Let it be noted that this category also includes red’s more exuberant cousin “pink”. Suffice to say, red/pink colored hair is for the Asian wanting to express themselves through some ridiculously alternative fashion trend. (such as goth, emo or lolita when jet black just isn’t hardcore enough.) As a hair color, red is an extravagantly unnatural choice for Asians.

Yet, it exudes that “Hey, look at me!” attitude, which may suit those wannabe extroverts wishing to make fools of themselves in public. Simply put, if an Asian wants to avoid being ridiculed in a large group of people, they shouldn’t dye their hair an extravagantly outrageous shade of this color! However, if done sparsely with a brunette twinge, it can be made acceptable. Basically with red, the more natural-looking, the better. (see above)

Blonde: This is a tough one because Western values dictate a belief that blondes are generally attractive and that blonde hair is very desirable. After all, don’t blondes have more fun? Asians like fun, right? Right…? The problem here is that the majority of blondes today aren’t even naturally blonde, emphasizing the desirability of such a trait. However, 99% of the time, “blonde hair” and “Asian” shouldn’t even be put in the same sentence together. Obviously, there are occasions where blonde Asians can come off as absolute knockouts, but a blonde Asian gives off a trashy look, as the blonde hair contrasts so sharply with the general Asian skin color. The first thing to come to mind here can end up being: *cough*hooker*cough*. Well, depending on who you ask, that might not necessarily be a bad thing…

Reality TV whore/Bleached blonde/Asian – Tila Tequila, hot or not?

Multicolored: Okay, if you’re a clown or a clown-in-training then we’ll cut you some slack. For anyone else, if you wish to don a multicolored rainbow on your head, put simply, you should be stoned immediately! Come on guys, Asians are supposedly renowned for their “intelligence”, so for the sake of all of us, just don’t do it, okay?

Anything else: Umm, are you stupid? See multicolored.

There are certain exceptions. Asians who reside in areas where ridiculous hair style trends are seen as somewhat of a norm, often can conform by sporting a ridiculous hair style of their own, often with an outrageous color that should never be seen on an Asian’s head (or many other people’s heads for that matter). Yes, this is referring specifically to people in some parts of Japan, Korea, and HK, who think they’re “oh so funky” what with their red, green & purple hair colors. Remember kids, if you’re making such an effort to be non-conformist, you’re in fact conforming, and around in a circle we go…

White people can often manage to pull off bleached hair with aplomb; unfortunately this is not a good idea for many Asians, unless that unnatural look is what they’re going for deliberately. So fellow Asians, even though you may be extremely tempted, the general consensus is that you shouldn’t dye your hair any color other than brown (or perhaps dark red). Anything else just doesn’t work! Here’s some food for thought: as much as many straight men want to try on women’s underwear, we know we just mustn’t do so. The same principle is applicable here…

P.S. This is piece not intended to insult anyone, be it Asians who bleach their hair or men who don women’s underwear… oh and just for the record, this author has NOTHING against people (especially women) with bleached hair, even though an impression to the contrary may have been given. As mentioned earlier, if done right, Asians with bleached hair, or with subtle highlights can come off as quite gorgeous. Those people know who they are…  =)

    hi shaun!

haha @ the tv whore thing for tila tequila.

the whole brunette asian thing is getting REALLY old. i’ve wanted to dye my hair brown too, but then i’d just blend in with the rest of the asians.

bleached hair is trashy to me -__-

  • 2 HellO'Kitty // May 11, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Back in the ’80s I wanted to do my hair white. My hairdresser flat-out refused b/c he couldn’t guarantee my hair wouldn’t all fall out in the process. Now that I’m starting to go grey, I don’t even want to start THAT whole cycle of dying my hair for the rest of my life!

  • 3 Anonymous // May 11, 2008 at 3:08 pm

“For anyone else, if you wish to don a multicolored rainbow on your head, put simply, you should be stoned immediately!”

Take your obsession with conformity and shove it.

  • 4 sy88 // May 11, 2008 at 3:17 pm

^^LOL at the above comment. I always get worried when someone leaves an anonymous comment because that almost always means a criticism.

I don’t think ‘anonymous’ gets the point of this entire site. Gee, I’m not saying that people with non-conformist hairstyles should be literally stoned, it’s expression emphasising the extremity of my point in this case. Take it with a grain of salt =)

  • 5 hrhkat // May 11, 2008 at 9:10 pm

im no advocate for colored hair, dont get me wrong its a terrible idea, but how else are these asians going to look different when 1.8 billion of them look exactly the same…i think what the hell, they are young, why not, not i think the first picture with that aweful punk haircut is even worse, where the top of your head is very thick, and it gets very thin as it goes down, its disgusting, and is this decades mullet..for women

  • 6 YASPY Chick // May 12, 2008 at 11:10 am

I had my pictures professionally taken recently, all done with natural light. My natural highlights are a medium brown, so the pictures look like I’ve had my hair highlighted!

  • 7 YvesPaul // May 12, 2008 at 11:47 am

I actually like to dye my hair a deep brown. I always loved that color of hair, so it’s more of a fetish for me than anything else. Although my barber likes to dye his red with white tips and insisted on me getting a reddish brown every time I go there, so I have given up dyeing my hair.

I usually don’t like it when people dye their hair too light, but every other Asian seems to be doing those highlights, but my Buddhist philosophy is to live and let live, so if people feel that they should dye their hair in 5 different colors, they should feel free to do so. And I have to say Tila Tequila looks pretty cute in that blonde.

  • 8 hrhkat // May 13, 2008 at 11:59 pm

yea, for being a reality tv whore, she doesnt look half bad, kind of looks like a hot villian in some movie with to much special effects.
But i have to say, the girl with the pink hair and blue contacts, it took me awhile to see the asain in her, i first thought she was some white trash girl from oklahoma, who wanted to be different, then i realized she was asian, because of her facial shape, but everything else screams white trash girl wanting to be different.

  • 9 Amy // May 14, 2008 at 3:12 am

    ~ Shaun,
“as the blonde hair contrasts so sharply with the general Asian skin color.”

And also because Asian hair is so black, after bleaching it still can’t look like a natural blonde, but more of an “orangutan” orangy, yellowish colour that is simply ick.

    ~ hrhkat,
“the first picture with that aweful punk haircut is even worse, where the top of your head is very thick, and it gets very thin as it goes down, its disgusting, and is this decades mullet..for women”
haha this is exactly what I think. Can’t see the appeal in it. And these girls would be constantly pushing the top bit of their hair upward so it’ll get even more puffy.
But ah well, each to their own.

  • 10 sy88 // May 14, 2008 at 5:56 am

Thanks for the comments everyone. I’m particularly glad that the first pic of that girl is that much of a turnoff to everyone, because to be honest, I didn’t pick it… Peter did. But whatn I gather from the comments, is that it’s more the style being wrong rather than the colour, no?

I’ve got an idea for another related piece, but I think I’ll sit on it for the moment =)

  • 11 Justin // May 14, 2008 at 12:13 pm

yeah, i think dying your hair the wrong way can give you a dirty oily look, and dying hair can ruin your hair as well!

  • 12 hrhkat // May 14, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Yea its the cut, you know some people can pull off crazy colored hair, with a cute cut, but an ugly ass cut plus ugly ass color is just bad bad bad….O DO A BLOG ON THE ASIAN BOWL CUT! i cant believe it hasnt been dont yet. With the straight bangs…do the history of it, I would love to know when that whole thing started, and thats probably why so many asians now have ugly ass “unique” hair cuts. Asian hair is beautiful, usually thick, and perfectly straight, so I can see how their might be problems with it when wanting to do cute hair styles, because it doesnt have much curl to it for it to be easily styled, thats why im guessing the straight ugly punk thick on top thin on bottom thing started. o well, i hope to see a blog on asian hair styles, and i would love a history lesson on top of it…

  • 13 Annie Get Your Fun // May 15, 2008 at 1:13 pm

The girl with the multi-colored hair is Amy Doan (Shrinkle), if I’m not mistaken, and she rocks something serious. She’s a fashion designer and artist, and I’ve had a major girl crush on her for ages.

I actually think Asian gals get away with crazy hair color more so than anyone else because of a generally non-freckled, more uniform complexion.

  • 14 hrhkat // May 15, 2008 at 10:11 pm

your possibly right annie about asian girls maybe being able to pull it off. I think we see them on tv and in movies, its easier for us to think that they can pull it off. Although in person, if you were to encounter one at school, or work, (a job that doesnt involve peircings, or tattoos, or Hottopic) you would think they were out of place, because asian girls are supposed to be two things, one is kinda dowdy, but really smart, and you know she got accepted to harvard, but shes going to brown because she wants to be free from the norm, and two, the hot asian girl who dresses in hollister and abercrombie and fitch, she is semi smart, and would most likely get accepted to a state school. When i think of an asian girl, crazy dyed punk hair doesnt first come to mind, which is probably why they do it, because they want to be different, and since they can pull it off without looking hard and whorey, but usually cute, and innocent, it gives it that seal of O.K by the public. One of my best friends in highschool was an asian girl, and she had a rather large beehive, with a large black bow on the back, and under her black hair was bright pink. But even still I dont consider her a typical asian girl, but she probably is in japan, or more urban areas in the US.

  • 15 Lin // May 16, 2008 at 9:44 am

I have these annoying red strands in my hair when I stay out in the sun too long. It’s okay when you lift it up and you can actually see the red glinting against the black, but when you lok at the whole thing, the red blends with the black to make my hair look brown. Ugh.

  • 16 hrhkat // May 16, 2008 at 9:06 pm

having hair that looks brown is alot better then have 10 huge thick blonde and pink stripes in your hair, im sure your hair isnt too bad lin…

  • 17 YASPy Chick // May 17, 2008 at 5:15 am

    hrhkat,

You went to school with an Asian Amy Winehouse??

  • 18 hrhkat // May 18, 2008 at 3:00 am

YES I DID! she got into an ivy league, ofcourse, she was tiny just ity bity! she loved hello kitty, and that whole “im defying my parents, but i still want to be a brain surgeon, and then work for doctors without borders” deal. Ok she went to brown, I had a bit of a falling out with her in our senior year, but i still love her. I got a 98 on a test once, and she got a 95, and well that was the beginning of the end….lmao I cheated a bit ofcourse, I mean, hello, there is a difference between AP students and regular students, AP students know how to cheat well. She got into every ivy league I believe, except harvard. She didnt want to go to Princeton, because she said it was in New Jersey. She was very anti punk, but still wore the style, she dyed her hair pink for the class picture, then dyed it back to black so her parents wouldnt find out. Im guessing she was 4 feet 10 inches, but with her hive, she was probably like 5,4. she did have a nose peircing tho, but i dont remember her wearing it much. She didnt do drugs though, which at my school were plentiful. I didnt either, but all my other friends did, I did have to tell them that I developed a bit of a coke habit in my junior year, but I was off the stuff because I was going vegan, total bullshit lie. She was totally into the skinny jeans, and noam chomsky pins. And she was the best best best person at giving the silent treatment, i do know that, I dont think anyone could beat her in an ignoring contest. very asian, so very asian, she was vietnamese…nuff said

  • 19 Jen // May 21, 2008 at 12:02 am

Gotta agree with the natural color thing. i mean, it’s one thing to want to stand out, but standing out because you look like shit isnt really something you’d want to go for. not just asians but everybody in general. i mean, i bet i’m not the only one who’s cringed at the sight of a pasty white chick branding a head of jet black hair. it’s just not right.

  • 20 Bue Qiuyi // May 23, 2008 at 4:58 pm

let me ask are you an Asian female?
do you have this issue with your hair,
    and standing out?

and what is your problem with putting people down for who they are and want to be .
if someone wants to keep there black hair, or put brown in it let them do it! If they want red hair or a hair cut, let them be. it’s there hair not yours and this is why people don’t care or have rings in there nose and go to your hollister with their 5 colored hair and ” white trash ” clothing and freak the little ” norms “.

if it’s not you with the hair problem or the problem with rings in your nose and hottopic then please be quiet. Who are you to judge these people and pictures if they are not your own.

and i don’t think you’d like it if you where one of them Asian girls and you came to this site and saw the comments about your picture. you’d most likely be upset and hurt!

and for your little she’s scary ,a clown in training, spare the rest of us the trouble… I’m Chinese, Japanese, and white i have 9 colors in my hair not counting black. plenty of holes with rings in them and love hottopic, i may be a smart Asian… but I like to curse a lot [this comment was edited to become PG]

  • 21 Issie // May 25, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Shallowest, and most racist thing I’ve read this year, and I am an avid reader.

You appear to think all asians are the same. I challenge your notion that most asians are “shy, inhibitive” and “self-loathing” about their hair. Do you think that the only reason for a hair colour change is “self-loathing”?

Your perception that asians are ALL fair-skinned “orientals” (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans) is ignorant, egocentrical, and wrong.

People can do whatever they want, and your theories about the limited hair colours that Asians should experiment with are baseless, unfashionable, and restrictive. Also, I highly doubt they are the “general consensus”, as you so arrogantly claimed. Ever heard of the concept “freedom”?

Even if it strains your brainpower, do attempt to lay down your racist prejudices, learn more about this world, and write intelligently. It will do you a world of good.

  • 22 jen // May 26, 2008 at 12:18 am

you should take amy picture off she doesnt allowed people using her picture

    and you sy88
    you seriously make me sick
just because maybe you cant pull of certain hair colors that doesnt mean you should bring others down.

  • 23 hrhkat // May 26, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Ok you last couple posters dont seem to understand this blog. Its not that we care, its the fact that alot of asians do color their hair to stand out, but infact they are just following a fad, if you want o stand out shave your head, otherwise dont pull that “you norms think we are too unique and different”, no we dont. We “norms” dont need to have to go to extreme lengths to stand out, because we have personality and dont need alot of crap that alot of people do with terrible self esteem need, like crazy hair colors, etc. The people who do that want to be noticed, that fine, but be completely unique, coloring your hair just puts you in a certain group with people who dress and look just like you. Your not different if half the high school dresses and looks like you, sorry. You would stand out more if you were vocal and not with some little scene kid wannabe emo group, if your going to dress like them, then act like them, otherwise your a poser, and posers are sheep. color your hair all you want, thats fine, your young, most it only distracts from your face and personality, unless thats what you want. I guess alot of people would like to be known as “the girl with pink/blue/green hair”, instead of the really funny girl with a great personality. People judge books by there covers, sorry. I have a feeling that people who dress that way like to be the victim, and like to be treated differently, and like to be oppressed, if thats what you like then fine, but dont take it out on people for your choices.

  • 24 thissucksballs // May 27, 2008 at 12:26 am

damn, so negative! if you go online to look at j-rock bands, they can seriously pull off light coloured hair. it really looks good, not some sort of ‘trashy’ or ‘hooker’-like appearance. this is way too critical. black haired asians are so common, and they don’t exclaim “look at me”. they just want to look better than their common black..ness….

  • 25 wtf man // May 27, 2008 at 12:44 am

okay, seriously…i just read through a lot of your stuff.

this site is dedicated to what asian people like?

uh huh. you’d think that’s sweet.
well, if you’re going to create a site about asian people and what they like, make it good. don’t say shit about them. “oh they dont look great in dyed hair. they TRY to stand out when they don’t and are posers”
or “they chew with their mouths open, point with their midddle fingers, and cut in line.” stop stereotyping. i bet you anything that you’ve seen WHITE people eat with their mouths open, cut in line….but maybe not point with middle fingers (things like that are customs. things are different in different places. stop bashing them- if you grew up in china, i bet you would act according to their customs as well).

and seriously, you rant too much. if you hated the dumplings so much, why don’t you make your own? don’t yell at other people for doing things that you can’t even do.

and asians are smart- they want to be able to store food as long as possible, so they buy fresh food. who the hell wouldn’t? who goes out and buys rotten oranges? of course you’d check it for freshness. it’s smart. get the best for your money.

    goddammit, learn respect.
if you’re asian, you’re a disgrace to your race.
if you’re not, your race is definitely for SURE not perfect either.
    so stop complaining.

  • 26 Eric Shin // May 27, 2008 at 4:55 am

    sy88,

I agree with wtfman, you are a disgrace to the Asian race. How dare you judge us Asians who choose to alter our physical appearance! What gives you that right, huh?

I am an Asian male, have dyed blonde tips and think it looks great. Just because you’re insecure about your own appearance doesn’t mean you should make snap judgments about other people and group them all together. You’re an attention-seeking knob that needs to get a life!

I’ll stop short of threatening you all because of an article on a website, but believe me, I hope somebody gives you that big kick up the a** that you deserve.

So It’s back to boring dark brown black, till my hair gets healthy again. maybe black with red ends.

  • 30 Point Of View // May 28, 2008 at 1:42 pm

First off, this is said in a calm tone, not yelling or angry or anything, just presenting another point of view

Over and over again you keep saying that anyone who dyes their hair a color like pink etc. is doing it just to stand out, WRONG, have you ever thought about the fact that they might just like the colors?

I plan on getting pink highlights because I like colors… that’s it, I don’t give a crap about “standing out” or being different, I would actually prefer otherwise, I’m kind of shy. But even so I PERSONALLY like the colors, I would still dye my hair even if I never went outside again

and don’t reply with “don’t take everything so seriously” that’s just a lazy way of saying I don’t have an answer so I’m going to pretend it doesn’t matter”

i think you should do whatever the hell you want to with your hair, asian or not.
    bit stereotypical dont you think?
just because you have a certian idea of what asians should do or be or even how to act, doesnt mean that they are wrong to do otherwise, infact kudos to all the beautiful people who express themselves how they please.

    @27

and i hate people who don’t take ANYTHING seriously.

I understand this whole thing is satire, but I can’t help but still be offended…this seems to have hit the place where satire stops being funny and just prejudiced. And I’m not even asian. I’m white with dark dark brown hair, I’d be a stereotypical hispanic if it weren’t for my pale skin (I do actually have an asian-esque pale skin with vibrant yellow undertone). And I dye my hair several shades lighter copper because I think it looks nice and because I like red hair and think it’s sexy.

Someday I would like to dye my hair copper with bright orange highlights, or maybe let it grow out naturally to my coffee brown color and get blue and pink chunks dyed in. Just cause I think it looks neat, and I am an artist and like my inner creativity show on the outside too.

  • 34 Lolkay // Jun 2, 2008 at 10:07 pm

So, I just read through everyone’s responses and I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no need for all this arguing. I agree that sy88′s post was a little stereotypical, but it’s just an opinion. He/She’s not COMMANDING you to listen/agree to it. Even some of the Asians who find this offending can agree that SOME people just CAN’T pull it off and it looks awful. Also some people who can’t stand the colored/bleached hair can agree that there are some people that CAN pull it off. It’s just a matter of opinion and point of view. Is there really a reason to debate? People can do what they want to do. People can think what they want to think. This post was just an opinion of one person.

  • 35 . // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:48 pm

you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. any asian can be just as dumb or smart as any white man/woman. it all matters on the enviroment given. if there is 10 white people in an area where education is highest, chances are they will most likely succeed. if there are 10 asians in an area where education is minimal, BAM! you figure out the rest.

Everyone one of you who say that Asian girls are supposed to represent intelligence and all that bs are narrow and close-minded traditionalists. We live in America and we all have the freedom to express ourselves in whatever manner we choose. I am personally offended that you would use my best friend (Amy Doan of Shrinkle) to make an example of how Asian girls should not look like clowns. Sorry assholes, but we don’t represent ASIA. We portray our self-identities in this salad bowl of American culture as confident, creative and artistic American girls. Further, my hair is multi-colored (pink and violet) and I could care less what all any of you traditionalist perceive me as. I went to UC Berkeley, enrolled as a freshman and completed a double major BA in three years. I live in the Silicon Valley and am now climbing my way up the corporate ladder with piercings, tattoos and unconventional hair color. Amy also has a college degree and has her own successful clothing company. So all you guys who want to call us clowns can go right ahead. Feel free to email me with your comments as I am not a fan of this site and will not be checking back for response. However, keep in mind that I only wanted to express my opinion on this stupid thread and if I do come across any email responses I will probably laugh at them and delete them, so don’t expect me to waste more time telling you how ignorant and close-minded you are.

  • 37 Karen // Jun 9, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Dude, people. If you are all going to get so offended as to rant about how sterotyped and offensive this post is, then don’t go on a website called “stuff asian people like”. Now I understand why parodies and satires have to be protected by law!

  • 38 Shelly // Jun 9, 2008 at 4:06 pm

    You are very stereotypical.

And Tila Tequila, how is she a whore? You’d be a super model/singer if you could get the money she’s getting.

Er, whatever. those of you who criticized or are about to criticize on this page, you’re gay. you “#73 Bleached Hair-POST” haterz should shut up about ‘freedom’ and how sy88 should just leave them alone, bcoz they can do ‘whatever the hell that they want’.

So why can’t sy88 have a say on whatever he wants to say? and speak out his opinions about this topic? if you hate the post, then you shouldn’t of read it, stupid.

    STOP IT.

You look absolutely widiculous and give the rest of us a bad name. I for one, am offended everytime I see an Asian girl with fried-orange hair and electric blue contacts. Who do they think they’re fooling?

  • 57 Marisa // Aug 6, 2008 at 11:29 am

Hm. How about those in Japan? The Harajaku style? People don’t stone them.

Okay, they might smirk or gasp at first. Who wouldn’t? But it has been a global phenomenon up to this day.

Kept my hair black though. :D

  • 58 Rose // Aug 8, 2008 at 10:00 am

Wow this was a disgustingly homogenous anti-individual article :| Even if it’s meant in “Jest”(common excuse), you should still be ashamed of yourself.

Regardless of whether you believe they should be literally stoned, your beliefs are still pretty disgusting.

“So why can’t sy88 have a say on whatever he wants to say? and speak out his opinions about this topic? if you hate the post, then you shouldn’t of read it, stupid.”

Because dying your hair doesn’t affect anyone. Getting up on a podium expressing viewpoints;the whole point of that is to spread an ideal. He represents a rather disgusting side of life anyone “intelligent” should oppose(seriously, WTF at that comment).

There are such things as viewpoints that are taken offensively, and viewpoints thta are inherently offensive since they make a move against the personal rights of others(Where those rights in turn have little effect on others.

And I don’t understand people who say they’re all “Following a fad”. EVERYONE follows some fad or another, and a fad that’s slightly less mainstream is,probabilisticaly, more likely to be something that fits you(Think of it being like more sizes that fit people outside of the mainstrea rather than a poor attempt at “one size fit all”).

  • 59 D // Aug 19, 2008 at 11:21 pm

This viewpoint sounds like it belongs to the banana republic conservative Asian. Which may be a good or bad thing depending on who’s doing the judging.

As for me, the only hair colors I like are red, blue, and of course black.

And I like seeing people looking different from the average person, whether it’s with hair color or clothes, even if it’s been done before. It’s refreshing and if the person looks ridiculous, I love it even more. Seriously, who cares if it was/is a fad. Most ppl might do it to fit in or whatever, but some actually do it because they truly like it.

Besides, although normal is safe and there’s a smaller chance of you being laughed at..it’s boring. Yet, too much craziness is tiring and probably more maintenance. Whatever.

Even though it’s just hair color, it’s the little things that count. Variety once in a while is a good thing.

  • 60 AsianKitty_ox // Aug 27, 2008 at 6:30 am

I think Tila Tiquila is gorgeous and people should stop slating her because it’s who she wants to be and she didn’t even ask for any of your opinions in the first place. At least she can carry it off. At the moment, I have dyed brown hair, and I would like to dye it just a tiny bit lighter but I wouldn’t go as far as blond, because I just know i couldn’t be able to pull it off! But i do think the whole blue eyes blond hair thing is just so pointless. Hitlers dead! we don’t need to please him now!

  • 61 Yasuko // Aug 29, 2008 at 10:14 am

    ^^ What a dumb ass.
How the hell would people hate the post if they didn’t even read it? You have to read it to hate the post, stupid. If you’re saying for sy88 to post whatever is on his mind, then why can’t other people comment on whatever is on our mind?

    God I hate dumb people.
They should be all sent to the moon.

I’m asian, I’m definately not quiet, I dye my hair, I don’t like sushi.
    Hmmm…

  • 62 sy88 // Sep 1, 2008 at 12:04 am

Wow I haven’t been on this page for ages… it’s kinda weird how my humble ‘bleached hair’ post has turned into an all-out witch hunt! Should I be scared for my safety now?

People are taking it very personally IMO, and insults are being hurled left, right and centre… not ideal, I would say. Again, let me emphasize, it’s all light-hearted, people! If you don’t like the piece then please feel free to say so, but the personal attacks on one’s character are very hurtful sometimes. Even those few who support my POV seem to be getting stick.

Seems like there’s an invisible line we’re not supposed to cross or something. We’re allowed to criticize the tendency for Asian girls to go for white guys, we’re allowed to take shots at our weird tendency to use excessive peace signs, and be obsessed with the small shape of our eyes… but oh no, when one points out something that hits a small minority to close to home… we’ve gone too far, have we?

Just one last thing I wanted to discuss, and it’s from the post directly above mine (sorry, I really couldn’t be bothered going through each and every post)…
Yasuko: “If you’re saying for sy88 to post whatever is on his mind, then why can’t other people comment on whatever is on our mind?”

Well, you’re more than welcome to do so. in fact, I believe that’s what you’re doing right now. And i think we’d all appreciate it if you could tone down on calling people “stupid” or “dumb ass” just because they disagree with you. It’s quite demeaning to be honest…

Lastly, I think the pic of the Asian girl with multi-coloured hair was taken down due to copyright issues… and we sure hope it doesn’t happen again!

    Regards,
    Shaun

Tila Tequila is only half asian, so I guess she looks more natural with the blonde hair.

Asian girls who bleach their hair are cute… but guys should stick to their natural black color. (No offense to asian boys who have bleached hair!)

  • 67 D // Nov 24, 2008 at 8:28 pm

    I BEG TO DIFFER.

asians who dye their hair any shade of brown tend to give off the impression that they’re desperate to be white. in my mind, it is no better than blonde, except that it generally tends to be more flattering than blonde.

with more vibrant shades of red and all those colors that don’t naturally sprout from the human scalp, they manage to TRANSCEND race as those colors belong to NO race. writing off these possibilities is not only dismissive and narrow-minded, but AESTHETICALLY IGNORANT.

while we’re at it: there is no such thing as a distinct “asian” skin tone. asians come in many shades of dark and light, warm and cool.

it is EMBARRASSING for me to learn that this blog is written by asians, as it most often offers neither meaningful insight nor clarity. even your efforts at humor are tepid and ineffective.

    put this to rest, PLEASE.

  • 69 Anonymous // Nov 28, 2008 at 3:10 pm

what a great way to put down your fellow asians. this is ridiculous. whoever wrote this ‘article’ is an idiot. blacks, whites, asians, mexicans, etc. it doesn’t matter. everyone dyes their hair. and its all differs depending on the person, not the race. not every white girl is going to match blonde hair, just the same as every other race. some asian girls dont look bad with blone, brown, red hair.

my hair is naturally a light/medium red/brownish color, and i’m asian. what you going to say. i dont match my natural color? are you going to assume that its fake and that i’m trying to be “white” cause i’m not. and for that fact, just because you dye your hair doesn’t mean you’re trying to be western. i dont know where the hell that idea came from. its just to do something different, try something different. if everyone sticks to their old routines, we’d never get anywhere.

my hair now? i dyed it black and i’m going to get blonde hairlights tomorrow? guess you’d consider me an idiot? but thats how i see whoever wrote this ‘article’ as well. get offline. get a life. get a box of dye cause i’m sure you’ve dyed your hair before too. pretty much just GROW THE FCUK UP.

  • 70 Na // Dec 6, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Thanks for a good article that killed off my boredom. Other people need to respect another’s point of view by at least criticizing it more diplomatically, not with f***, ass, idiot or something of the like.

  • 71 Helena // Feb 10, 2009 at 2:08 pm

hmmm…so you’re saying asian people that decides to dye their hair are just…ridiculous? in the sense of, they’re not staying with their natural color?

interesting, so those white girls that are born with darker color hair decides to dye their hair blonde is okay and that they’re not doing anything out of the ordinary?

it’s just dying your hair. it’s like saying chicks with natural curls who try so hard just to straighten their hair are out of their mind.

  • 72 maiysta // Feb 24, 2009 at 7:32 am

In the past 4 years, I had blonde hair, green hair, blue hair, dark blue hair heck when I dye my hair I also dye my eyebrowns!. Did I mention I was a guy?

I still don’t understand why dying your hair is not well looked. And I’m not talking about giving a bad image in your work.

Why is the word western used as if whites are the only people who exist in the west
why are You people sooo obsessed with our (european) culture it’s like that’s all you know how to discuss, you’re embarassing yourself there’s more to life than constantly finding ways to compare yourselves to whites or trying to prove to the world that u don’t want to be white. It’s a rather disturbing fixation, especially when we don’t give a damn about you. There’s other cultures in the world you know.

asians with bleached hair sometimes really annoy me. especially when they’re extremely effeminate guys. but I must say, it also annoys me that white people dye their hair black.

  • 77 Christine // Nov 16, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. But I must say that I disagree with the author’s. I’m Asian, and my hair is naturally dark brown. It’s now jet black, bleach blonde and purple. Does this make me inferior than Asians with brown or black hair? I find it very ludicrous how some Asians seem to be so obsessed with picking on other Asians who are out of the “norm.” I have nothing against the author’s aesthetic values, but he or she should respect others’ aesthetic values as well. This is a free country and people can do whatever they want to do with their hair. Hey, it’s not your hair that they’re messing with. Get over it and mind your own business.

  • 78 toe-she // Dec 24, 2009 at 1:19 am

  • 79 Thu Nguyen // Feb 12, 2010 at 12:10 am

This article is completely prejudice against us Asians on so many different levels. To say that Asians who dye their hair are trying to fit into the Western hemisphere because they’re trying to be white? Are you serious? How can you possibly try to even justify such an ignorant remark? I dye my hair because I personally like reddish brown hair not because I’m trying to be “white”. My appearance is mine alone. To try to say that Asians who dye their hair are trying to be unique and different is ignorant as well. How about all the caucasian men and women who dye their hair blonde when they naturally have brown hair? Are they trying to be different too? Or caucasian men and women who dye their hair black? Also on another note, to say that all Asians look alike is completely racist. Racism arises when you group people of a similar ethnic background as somehow being “outsiders” to your own, and instead of seeing them as individuals, you see them all as one group of people who all look alike. This article is just offensive, you should be ashamed of yourselves. To claim to know the stuff that Asian people like, I must tell you, you really have no clue.

  • 82 Girl Here // Oct 2, 2011 at 9:52 pm

I think blonde highlights are ok, most asians do it, but doing it full blonde is just ridiculous, and you look white washed.

  • 83 Diddy // Oct 25, 2011 at 8:33 am

    @Thu Nguyen:

You’re totally mistaken. First, you must be blind not to see that yes, many Asian people DO want to adpot western beauty criteria. I am not saying they want to be white, but the lesage they send is that Western variety of hair color is better.

So tell me, why do Asian people do this ONLY since they have cultural links with western world?
Why do so smany of them choose willingly white people’s hair color (and not pink, green or blue, wheras they could with the products we have nowadays)?
Why are there so many people with european-colors-dyed hair in Asian magazines and movies? Whereas very few Causasian people appear with fake black hair in western magazines…

The big the difference between you and me is that I clearly see that there is something wrong. You think you are not trying to look like a white person, but the point is, you have adopted a beauty criteria which is in no way Asian, but definiltely from Europe. You probably never would have if everyone on Earth had black hair.

So yes, the author of this article is right: white can dye their hair, and it still looks more or less natural, whereas it doesn’t work with other peoples.
Saying that is not racism…or then God IS racist, since that’s the way He made peoples of this world. It’s up to us, people from around the world, not to make it trendy to be more Eureopean.

I can see according to your post that what you’ve read here makes you rather angry. My opinion is, either you don’t realize something, or else you are angry to see that some are no fools and clearly see that some Asians would really like to be “whiter”.

And this is a most disgusting fashion: I do not see why people couldn’t look great and have personnality without cheating (you said it yourself: not all Asian people look the same, it would be silly to think so). The same goes for Causasians, since many of them too, dream to have blond hair (which is as stupid, the only difference is that is shows far less).

Someone says above “mind your business” to the author.
Well, of course, anyone is free to dye his/her hair…but we too are free to give our opinion about a dangerous fashion who tends, yes, to tell that “white looks better”.
And the many reactions of pride I have read make me think that the author is right: it’s just that some are rather proud and are using any argument to hide that yes, they wish they had no-black hair and could change it looking still natural. Some mus een be rather jealous, and this makes me sad, since beauty belongs to no skin color or origin (and hair color, of course: what makes a person beautiful is almost never his/her hair color).

Some say “racism”. The racism in there is to pretend everything is alright and ignore waht is obvious.

  • 84 Diddy // Oct 25, 2011 at 9:40 am

@all the Asians here who claim they are not willing to look white when they change their hair’s color, please take a look at this:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9142171923095749295

A very good sum up of white standardization, especially when it deals with beauty.
What the Black speaker says at 19:30 is SOOOO true.

Let’s see how many will still think the same afterward…and dare tell me there is nothing wrong with that.

  • 85 Jenny // Apr 1, 2017 at 4:26 am

Most white women are brunettes and not only do they dye their hair blonde, they dye it unnatural shades of red. Then there is green and pink.

I love my natural black hair and I think it’s beautiful, but to mix it up, I might dye it dark blue, like Uchiha Mikoto dark blue. Indigo?
