#8 Karaoke

Posted February 19th, 2008 by themachine · 34 Comments

When they are not playing Counter-Strike, studying, or studying, Asians like to wind down and take off some stress with some good old fashion karaoke. Karaoke is popular in the Asian community for one reason: it’s a great way to enhance the Asian flush (a term used to describe an Asian’s generally low tolerance for alcohol.) In combination with cheap alcohol, cheesy pop songs, off key singing, and uncontrollable pelvic thrusts, karaoke becomes an extremely fun event for the Asian singer(s) and the surrounding listeners. The singer(s) have the opportunity to unleash their inner Rain while simultaneously busting out moves that James Brown (R.I.P.) would be jealous of. The listeners get to enjoy the painful yet “entertaining” comedy that ensues. This social phenomenon has been studied by Harvard psychologists and has been labeled as the William Hung Effect. An excerpt of the study results is listed below:

‘Through the random sampling of individuals that were confirmed to be of Asian descent through extensive blood and DNA testing, a comparative experiment concluded that the amalgam of an Asian’s low level of alcohol tolerance, bargained liquor, and a karaoke machine is the epitome of fun in the Asian culture.” - Harvard University’s “The William Hung Effect”

i find it interesting this blog is (C) 2006 when the first entry is mid-feb 2008, right after stuffwhiteylikes took off. pasted from the other pages?

    you should do these pages:

    japanese rice cars
    hair cuts
    hip hop
    white women

and maybe some bitter asian man thing about his women being taken, and being de-masculinized by mainstream culture, unless you’re a martial artist (that’s another entry)

  • 2 greebo // Feb 20, 2008 at 1:31 am

    and CNY
    and copying japanese women’s haircuts
    joining friendster/facebook (instead of myspace)
square glasses and bad hair (first gen men)
LV bags, burberry clutches (japanese women in particular, but no different than the rich, consumption-oriented american woman)
red chili paste for your pho soup
    tech geek gadgets

are you including indians as “asians”? cuz that’s a whole nother feature waiting to explode.

    1) Holy CRAP that’s me in the photograph! No, not the William Hung photograph, of course.

    2) We talked a bit about this on 8Asians. There are a couple of other gems of “What Asian People Like:”

i don’t mind the generalizations, but posting SKIM, a Korean-American artist, as one of the pics for karaoke, seems a little lazy. She is an activist and hip-hop artist, sings about immigration, prison, loving women, working single mothers, and works with 2Pac’s former manager Leila Steinberg. And yes, while she is AMAZING at karaoke she is much more than a posterchild for karaoke, i would say actually that there is no other artist out there quite like her. I would say that she takes her love of hip-hop back to its resistance roots…

    here’s one review:

wow, i didn’t know about skim, but then again, i dont keep posted on these things

  • 11 MV // Mar 11, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Wow is that Skim? You’re right, she is much more than a random karaoke asian person. Cop her music if you can. Don’t sleep on Skim.

are asian people attracted to read heads?

  • 14 Ray // Jun 23, 2008 at 4:40 am

Karaoke? eet ees true. Damn I’m half asian, and for most of my life i never liked karaoke, until like that past year or so.

and too jessica’s comment: ARE YOU SERIOUS?? If asian people attracted to red heads is an asian stereotype, better write me into THAT category. WOW the hottest thing ever is either the stereotypical Irish girl with pale skin red hair and freckles, or a Japanese chapatsu with pale skin and red-hair. SOO FREAKING HOT!! im way into redheads no matter what their race.

What about 80s music. Asians love Michael Jackson and Madonna

“Asian flush (a term used to describe an Asian’s generally low tolerance for alcohol.)”

This statement is a layman’s term for ALDH2 deficiency. Take note, there is a higher risk of esophageal and oropharyngolaryngeal cancer among those with this genetic mutation who drink alcohol.

My dad is a terrible singer and he LOVES singing karaoke and one time he sang at a restaurant in Philadelphia’s Chilnatown and it embarrassed my mom!!!!

  • 25 ilovehorseyrides // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:16 am

Both my parents are horrible singers and the worst part that they sing to/with my 4 and 6 year old cousins, even at random times!!! It reminds me of baby talk and it is EXTREMELY IRRITATING!!!! I’m so glad headphones and earbuds are invented!!! :)

  • 26 Ryan // Nov 9, 2015 at 6:23 am

Let’s not forget the fact that a good number of karaokes, if not the majority, in Asian cities also double as brothels.

  • 27 ilovehorseyrides // Jan 14, 2016 at 2:04 pm

They even have karaoke for kids’ songs, too!!! The songs give me nostalgia. I still have some of these songs on VHS and DVD!!! I listened to these songs during my childhood:

    莫忘我 (Auld Lane Syne)

(1 thing I will never understand is what selling chickens have to do with pinwheels LOL)

月光光 (I HATED this song as an infant. I would scream my head off every time it is played or sung to me LOL!!!)
